Buldak Swicy Review – Sweet, Spicy... or Just Too Mild?

Every time Buldak releases a new flavour, you already know I'm going to hunt it down. A few weeks ago, while browsing the shelves at 7-Eleven, I spotted the new Buldak Swicy and immediately threw it into my basket.

I mean... sweet and spicy? That's literally one of my favourite flavour combinations.

I'm a huge fan of kerepek pedas—especially the sticky, caramelised kind that's sweet first, spicy second, and ridiculously addictive. So naturally, I thought Buldak Swicy would be right up my alley.

Unfortunately... it wasn't.

Where's the "Swicy"?

The biggest issue for me was that both flavours felt a little too shy.

It wasn't sweet enough to satisfy my sweet tooth, and it definitely wasn't spicy enough to earn the Buldak name. Instead of getting that bold, sticky-sweet kick I was expecting, the noodles tasted... surprisingly mild. Dare I say, almost bland.

Apparently, this isn't by accident. Swicy is actually marketed as the mildest Buldak flavour yet, with a heat level of just 1 out of 5. The spice is meant to build gradually after a few bites rather than hitting you immediately.

I get the concept, but personally, I wanted more excitement from the first mouthful.

Did I Buy the Wrong Version?

Here's where things get interesting.

I tried the bowl version, and after reading reviews online, a lot of people say the bowl and packet versions taste like two completely different products.

The packet version develops a much thicker, glossier sauce because the starch from the boiled noodles helps the sauce cling better. The bowl version, on the other hand, can end up a little watery since it's prepared with hot water alone.

The noodles are different too. Packet noodles tend to have a chewier, more satisfying texture, while bowl noodles are lighter with more air pockets.

Some reviewers also pointed out that the sauce in the bowl can sink to the bottom if you don't stir everything thoroughly, which could explain why my first few bites tasted so underwhelming.

Maybe... just maybe... I judged it too quickly.

Final Verdict

If you're new to Buldak or don't handle spicy food very well, Swicy might actually be a great starting point. It even comes with sweet sprinkles made from sugar crystals and caramel flakes, giving it a fun dessert-inspired twist.

For me, though, it just didn't deliver the bold sweet-and-spicy punch I was hoping for.

Would I buy it again?

Actually... yes.

But this time, I'm going for the packet version. I'm curious to see if the thicker sauce and chewier noodles can change my mind because I genuinely love the idea behind this flavour.

Have you tried both the bowl and packet versions? Is the packet really that much better? Let me know because I'm willing to give Swicy one more chance.
