If you're into storytelling, strong performances, and unsettling gore, Bring Her Back is definitely one to put on your radar. This Australian supernatural psychological horror doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or loud sound cues to terrify you, it creeps in slowly, making you feel uneasy and helpless as the story unfolds. It's a slow burn, but one that rewards your patience.
The film follows two step-siblings placed into foster care after the death of their father, only to find themselves trapped in an occult nightmare orchestrated by their eerie new guardian. While the plot may not reinvent the wheel in terms of resurrection horror, the perspective it takes feels fresh and grounded in emotional trauma, family tension, and the desperation of grief.
The gore in this film is extremely disturbing but not gratuitous. It compensates for the lack of consistent “scary” moments by making your stomach churn and your skin crawl in all the right ways. What stood out most to me was how emotionally involved I felt. I hated how hopeless it made me feel at times, but that tension kept me glued to the screen, rooting for the characters to survive the madness.
The performances across the board are fantastic, but Sally Hawkins deserves particular praise for her haunting portrayal of a mother clinging to the dead. She brings a depth and sadness to the role that makes everything even more disturbing.
Bring Her Back won’t be for everyone, especially not casual moviegoers or fans of fast-paced horror, but if you're someone who enjoys layered storytelling, a creeping sense of dread, and top-tier acting, it’s well worth your time. I'm giving this movie 8/10.
