Since I was super busy this week, I didn’t get the chance to head out and catch anything new in the cinema. Instead, I decided to stay in and stream some horror movies I missed earlier this year. One of them was Heart Eyes. I didn’t watch this one in theaters because, as far as I can remember, it wasn’t even shown here in Malaysia. So when I saw it available to stream on HBO Max, I thought, why not?
Just like any other slasher flick, Heart Eyes doesn’t really bring anything new to the table. It follows the same familiar beats: a masked killer, a festive setting (this time, Valentine’s Day), and lots of running, screaming, and blood. But to be fair, I actually enjoyed the light-heartedness of it. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which makes it an easy, casual watch for horror fans who just want to relax and enjoy a gory good time.
Speaking of gore, the kills were surprisingly graphic and creative, which I definitely appreciated. That’s probably the highlight of the whole movie for me. Apart from that, though, it’s your standard slasher formula: fun for what it is, but nothing groundbreaking or particularly memorable.
Overall, Heart Eyes is a decent pick if you’re in the mood for a simple, blood-soaked Valentine’s horror. I’m giving this movie a 5/10 for its effort and entertainment value.
