Was Mortal Kombat II fun to watch? Absolutely. But was it actually good? That’s a harder "no."

As a fan of the games, there is plenty to appreciate here visually. The film delivers the specific aesthetic and fight sequences that remind us why we fell in love with the franchise in the first place. However, when it comes to the narrative, it falls short. The actual game storylines have much more depth and interest than what we get on screen; here, the plot feels thin and secondary to the spectacle.

The performances don't help much, either. At times, the acting felt like watching an SNL skit. The humor leans heavily into "dad joke" territory, and the pop culture references often feel forced and unnatural. Whether it’s the writing, the delivery, or a combination of both, the dialogue frequently misses the mark.

Structurally, the film is a bit of a rollercoaster. The first half is sluggish, making even the fight scenes feel strangely draggy and uninspiring. That completely shifts in the second half, where the visuals explode into life and keep me on the edge of my seat. One technical gripe: I’m not a fan of the parallel fight sequences. Jumping back and forth between different matches simultaneously made the action chaotic and difficult to process.

How does it compare to the first movie? It’s essentially on par. I appreciated the expanded roster of characters in this sequel, though I absolutely hated the treatment of Queen Sindel—she deserved better.

Final Rating: 6/10

A win for the stunning visuals and late-game action, but it was let down by weak writing and a messy first half.
