The seventh installment of the iconic slasher franchise has finally arrived, and honestly, this movie came with a lot of baggage before it even hit the screen. Behind-the-scenes drama, cast exits, and creative shake-ups had already made fans nervous about the future of the series. When major cast members were fired or left the project and even the original director stepped away, it felt like the production was scrambling to keep the movie alive.

In a move that clearly felt like a rescue mission, the franchise brought back its ultimate final girl, Sidney Prescott, played once again by Neve Campbell. They also brought in original Scream writer Kevin Williamson to direct, which immediately signaled that the studio was trying to steer the franchise back to its roots.

So the big question is: did it work?

The answer is… kind of.

Overall, Scream 7 is a watchable movie, but it’s far from the best entry in the franchise. In fact, I’d argue it might be one of the weaker installments so far. The movie shifts the setting away from New York and brings the story into Sidney’s current life, which I actually didn’t mind. Seeing the narrative revolve around Sidney again gives the film a familiar emotional anchor.

Where the movie struggles, unfortunately, is the motive behind the Ghostface killers.

I won’t spoil the reveal here, but when the explanation finally drops, my reaction was basically: huh? The reasoning feels forced and oddly weak for a franchise that usually thrives on clever meta commentary and twisted motivations. It almost feels like the writers had the kill scenes planned first and then tried to reverse-engineer a story to justify them.

That being said, the kills themselves are solid. The movie delivers on the slasher elements: tense chases, brutal attacks, and some genuinely effective scare sequences. If you’re watching Scream for the blood and the thrills, there’s still plenty to enjoy here.

But the biggest issue for me is how predictable some of it feels. At one point, it almost seems like the movie isn’t even trying that hard to hide who the Ghostface killers are. The moment certain characters appear on screen, you can already start connecting the dots.

And in a franchise famous for its whodunit mystery? That’s a bit disappointing.

Still, despite its flaws, Scream 7 isn’t a complete disaster. It’s just… a mixed bag. A film that has great kills and nostalgic value, but a storyline that’s simply too weak to carry the legacy of such an iconic horror franchise.

Rating: 5/10
