Movie Review: Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an absolute thrill ride and, dare I say, the best Sonic movie yet. In fact, I think this installment outshines recent superhero movies. The highlight for me was the fighting sequences, which were masterfully crafted and kept me on the edge of my seat. Overall, this movie hits all the right notes and takes the franchise to new heights.

Storyline Overview

From the very first movie to this one, the storytelling has been consistently well-executed. Each installment builds on the last, and this third movie is no exception. I appreciate how the creators took their time to introduce new characters gradually instead of overwhelming the audience. This pacing allowed each character’s backstory to shine, making their arcs more meaningful.

Character Highlights

Shadow steals the spotlight in this movie, giving it a much-needed edge. His character is dynamic and adds depth to the narrative. The introduction of Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather was another excellent choice, providing additional layers to Dr. Robotnik’s character and showing his growth. As for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, their camaraderie and teamwork have evolved beautifully, reminiscent of their dynamic in the classic animated series. Watching them grow closer as a team was truly heartwarming.

Villain Analysis

This movie’s tone is noticeably darker, and I loved it. Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather takes on the role of the ultimate big bad, and his mission is far more ambitious than any previous villain. His goal to destroy Earth—and himself along with it—raises the stakes to unprecedented levels for a “kids’ movie.” The intensity and scale of his plans made him a truly formidable antagonist.

Emotional & Thematic Depth

The movie delivers a touching message about loss, one that may be familiar but is no less impactful. It teaches us that even though we may lose someone, they’re never truly gone as long as we keep their memories alive. A particularly moving quote from the film, “A light shines even though the star is gone,” encapsulates this beautifully.

Final Thoughts

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a must-watch for fans and non-fans alike. Even if you’re not familiar with the franchise, the stunning visuals alone are worth the experience. For me, this movie is a solid 9/10 and a perfect way to close out my cinematic journey for 2024!
