Is The Devil’s Mouth Worth Watching?
A Shark Movie Where You Root for the Shark
When I first saw the trailer for The Devil’s Mouth, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. But looking at the cast list, my curiosity piqued. Seeing talent like Kathryn Newton (Freaky, Abigail) and Lana Condor (To All the Boys I've Loved Before) attached to a creature feature usually means we might get something elevated above standard low-budget shark fare.
However, shark movies are a tricky sub-genre. My golden rule for shark cinema is simple: If you can't do it right, don't do it at all. Ever since Jaws set the gold standard back in 1975, every shark film since just needs to give us a compelling reason to stick around. Either you deliver genuine tension (The Reef, 47 Meters Down), or you go full absurd chaos (Sharknado, Sharktopus).
So, where does The Devil’s Mouth land and, more importantly, is The Devil’s Mouth worth watching? Let’s dive in.
What Is The Devil’s Mouth About?
Directed by Jeff Wadlow, The Devil’s Mouth follows a group of lifelong college friends taking one final exotic vacation in Thailand before stepping into the real world. Looking for a thrill, they hire a local guide to lead them through "The Devil's Mouth," a remote, flooded freshwater cave system.
What starts as an adventurous swim through cavernous underwater passages turns into a claustrophobic nightmare when a recent storm washes a territorial apex predator (an aggressive bull shark) into the cave's brackish waters. Trapped in narrow, murky tunnels with oxygen dwindling, the group must figure out how to escape before they become cave-dwelling shark bait.
The Big Twist? You’ll Be Rooting for the Shark
The premise itself is nothing we haven't seen before (47 Meters Down: Uncaged covered similar underwater cave horror). So what did the filmmakers do to make The Devil's Mouth stand out?
They made almost every single main character intolerable.
Normally, horror movies want you to pray for the protagonist's survival. Here? It takes about 20 minutes before you start actively taking the shark’s side. Apart from the two poor local guides who are just trying to do their jobs, the friend group is so whiny, reckless, and toxic to one another that watching them panic feels less like a tragedy and more like cosmic retribution.
Whether that was an intentional subversion of horror tropes or just a result of questionable character writing, it strangely works as entertainment. You’re not watching to see who survives; you’re watching to see how the shark cleans up the cave.
Visuals, Acting, and B-Movie Expectations
For a straight-to-streaming title on Prime Video, the movie looks decent enough visually. The tight, flooded rock tunnels lend a genuine sense of claustrophobia, even if the underwater CGI shark looks questionable in certain lighting.
As for the cast, Kathryn Newton brings her natural charisma and tries her best to anchor the emotional core. Lana Condor plays her controlling, overbearing best friend Max, and while she delivers a committed performance, the script forces her character into such annoying territory that it’s hard to stay invested in their drama while a predator is hunting them.
The Verdict: Final Score (4/10)
So, is The Devil’s Mouth worth watching?
At a 4/10, it’s not an unwatchable disaster; it’s just painfully generic. It avoids going full B-movie trash like Zombie Shark or Sharktopus, but it also fails to build the genuine suspense needed to stand alongside the creature-feature greats.
If you’re a die-hard shark movie completionist or you just want to turn your brain off on a Friday night and laugh at insufferable characters getting chomped in dark caves, it passes the time. Otherwise, you're better off re-watching Jaws.
