Movie Review: Wolf Man

Writer's picture: Faiz FaisalFaiz Faisal

Wolf Man promised much with Leigh Whannell at the helm, following his success with The Invisible Man. However, the result is underwhelming. While there are some interesting touches—like the werewolf POV—the film falls short in delivering a fresh or twist-filled narrative. It’s a slow-paced, family drama with horror elements that lack the impact one might hope for. My rating? Stay tuned.

Storyline Overview

The movie follows Blake, a family man navigating his relationship with his workaholic wife, Charlotte, and their daughter, Ginger, as they relocate to his childhood home. A werewolf attack sets Blake on a grim path of transformation, threatening the very family he seeks to protect.

The pacing leans heavily on the slower side, with no significant climactic build-up. The story is overly predictable, though there are unsettling moments that elicit a brief WTF reaction. The father-daughter bond is a redeeming factor but doesn’t get the depth or complexity it deserves.

Character Highlights

The cast, featuring Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, and Matilda Firth, delivers solid performances, but none particularly stand out. The family dynamic—central to the plot—is convincing but lacks layers or development. It’s a one-note relationship that doesn’t elevate the emotional stakes of the narrative.

Villain Analysis

The werewolf itself is visually terrifying and raw, which is a highlight. Its transformation is visceral and painful—exactly as it should be. However, the werewolf lacks distinctive traits that would make it more memorable, like eerie howls, which are oddly absent. Without Blake’s internal struggle, this would feel like a run-of-the-mill creature feature.

Emotional & Thematic Depth

At its core, Wolf Man is a family drama wrapped in horror elements. It parallels real-life struggles, like abusive tendencies and regret, though here it’s amplified through Blake’s transformation. The story explores the idea of losing control and hurting loved ones, despite best intentions. The ending offers a faint emotional tug but doesn’t hit hard enough to leave a lasting impression.

Final Thoughts

Wolf Man is a passable watch for casual moviegoers who don’t mind a predictable story with a few unsettling scenes. However, critics and horror enthusiasts may find the film lacking in originality and depth. To sum it up: It’s a movie.

Rating: 5/10
