I don’t think this movie was ever shown in Malaysian cinemas, at least I don’t remember seeing any promo for it. But the moment I found out about Y2K, I knew I had to watch it. After all, I was there when Y2K happened. I was nine, but I still have a pretty vivid memory of that whole era, the music, the fashion, and that collective panic about computers going rogue when the clock struck midnight.
Y2K is a 2024 American horror comedy directed by Kyle Mooney and written by Mooney and Evan Winter. It stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Lachlan Watson, Daniel Zolghadri, Mason Gooding, Lauren Balone, Eduardo Franco, and Fred Durst. The story follows a group of high school students trying to survive when the infamous year 2000 bug causes all technology to gain sentience and turn against humanity.
With that premise and the “horror comedy” label, I was expecting a wild, bloody, hilarious ride. But honestly, it fell short. The pacing was slow, and the humor felt too scattered to land. The kills weren’t fun, the horror wasn’t scary, and the comedy wasn’t particularly funny. The only real highlight for me was an unexpected cameo that gave me a brief “oh that’s fun” moment.
If anything, I’m just glad I didn’t watch this in the cinema because I would’ve walked out feeling pretty disappointed. I’m giving Y2K a 2/10, and those 2 points are purely for the nostalgic 2000s soundtrack that carried me back to simpler times.
