Sunday Short: The Tale of Sunny and Ethan

A photo of an orange cat

Ethan was just a boy when he first met the cat. It was a warm afternoon, the sun casting long shadows as he walked home from school. His backpack was slung over one shoulder, and his mind was preoccupied with thoughts of the weekend. But a sudden, loud "meow" broke through his thoughts, pulling him from his daydreams.

Curious, he followed the sound to a nearby ditch, where he spotted a small, orange kitten trapped among the weeds. The kitten's fur was matted, and its tiny body shook as it let out another desperate cry. Without hesitation, Ethan climbed down and gently scooped the kitten into his arms. The moment their eyes met, he felt an inexplicable warmth wash over him, as though he had found something he hadn’t even known he was missing.

Ethan took the kitten home and named it Sunny, after the vibrant color of its fur. From that day on, Sunny was his constant companion. The two were inseparable, sharing countless adventures and quiet moments alike. Sunny would curl up beside him as he did his homework, follow him around the house, and sleep at the foot of his bed every night.

But there was something else, something that lingered in the back of Ethan’s mind. He had always been prone to vivid dreams, dreams that felt more like memories. In these dreams, he lived in different times and places—sometimes as a young man in a bustling medieval village, other times as an explorer in the uncharted wilderness. But no matter the time or place, one thing was always the same: there was a cat by his side. And not just any cat, but a cat that looked exactly like Sunny.

As Ethan grew older, the dreams persisted. Each time, he would wake with a sense of déjà vu, the feeling that these were more than just dreams. Sunny remained by his side, watching him with eyes that seemed to hold centuries of wisdom. Years passed, and Ethan noticed a pattern. Sunny grew older too, and eventually, the inevitable happened—Sunny passed away.

Ethan was heartbroken, but even in his grief, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t the end. And he was right. Not long after, as he walked through the park, he heard a familiar "meow." There, beneath a bench, was a tiny orange kitten, looking up at him with the same eyes that had watched over him all his life. Ethan’s heart swelled with recognition. It was Sunny, back again.

This cycle repeated itself throughout Ethan’s life. Every time Sunny passed, Ethan would eventually find another kitten with the same orange fur, the same wise eyes. Each time, he knew it was Sunny, reincarnated and returned to him. The years went by, and with each new kitten, Ethan became more certain of the bond they shared—a bond that transcended lifetimes.

Ethan grew up, and Sunny grew old with him. When Ethan became a man, Sunny was there. When Ethan married and had children of his own, Sunny was there too. And when his children grew up and moved away, Sunny remained by his side, the one constant in his ever-changing life.

As the years went on, Ethan grew old. His hair turned gray, his steps slowed, and his body grew frail. But Sunny was always there, as he had been in every lifetime. On Ethan’s final day, he lay in bed, his breath shallow and his eyes heavy. Sunny, now an old cat once more, jumped up onto the bed and curled up beside him.

Ethan reached out a trembling hand and stroked Sunny’s fur, feeling the familiar warmth beneath his fingers. Sunny began to purr, a soft, comforting sound that filled the room. As Ethan closed his eyes, he felt a deep sense of peace wash over him. He knew, without a doubt, that this was not the end. In the next life, and the life after that, they would find each other again.

Sunny's purr grew louder, as if to reassure him. Ethan smiled, his heart full. With Sunny by his side, he drifted off, knowing that no matter what, they would always be together. Across time, across lifetimes, their bond was unbreakable—a love that would endure forever.
