All Hope Is Lost For Social Media Managers

I need to get this off my chest because lately, I’ve been feeling really frustrated about the so-called “social media manager” job opportunities out there.

This year alone, I’ve been to several interviews for social media manager roles. And out of all of them, not a single one actually knew what a social media manager does. Every interview started with the same line:

“You’ll be responsible for content creation, ads, KOL management, content planning, community management…”

And the list just keeps going.

When I asked about the team or department structure, I always get something like:

“Oh, everyone does everything here.”

“You’ll be the main PIC, but you can get assistance from other teams if needed.”

Translation? They’re not trying to hire a social media manager. They’re trying to hire an entire marketing department disguised as one person.

I’ve told them, politely, that it’s impossible for one person to handle all of that effectively. And you can probably guess what happens next: if I said no, I didn’t get the job. But if I said yes, I got the offer and the headache that came with it.

I really don’t understand businesses nowadays. You know that social media is one of the biggest marketing tools in today’s landscape, yet you don’t want to invest properly in it? Or sometimes, the expectations are just unrealistic.

Like, would you buy a Mercedes Benz with your first job salary? No, right? You’d start small, build your savings, and eventually work your way up to that Benz. It’s the same with marketing. You can’t expect cinematic, high-quality social content when your “team” is just one person and you don’t even provide the proper equipment or budget.

And when things don’t meet expectations, somehow the blame always falls on the social media manager.

With this kind of mindset, it’s no surprise so many social media managers are burned out, anxious, and constantly questioning themselves. I’ve been there and I’ve met others who are still stuck in that loop.

So honestly? At this point, I just want to say it out loud:

In 2025, it feels like all hope is lost for social media managers everywhere.
