When it comes to citrus flavours in food, I’m usually not the biggest fan. Lemon chicken? Meh. Orange-glazed anything? Rarely my thing. But because I’m me — the self-proclaimed tester of all limited-time fast-food flavours — of course I had to try KFC’s new Japanese Yuzu Chicken.
And honestly?
I didn’t expect it to be this good.
The First Impression: That Smell!
Let me be real — the smell caught me off guard first. Yuzu has a naturally strong citrus fragrance, and this one was loud. I opened the box and immediately went, “Okay wow… hi, hello citrus!” But after the initial shock, I took a bite, and the flavour made sense.
The Taste: Spice + Tang = A Little Party
Taste-wise, it actually works. The yuzu gives a bright tang, the seasoning adds a little kick, and together it creates a spicy-tangy combo that makes your tongue do a little dance. Not spicy in the “your lips are burning” way — but spicy in the “flavourful and layered” way.
If you like something zingy, fragrant, and flavourful, this is one you’ll enjoy.
The KFC Factor: Inconsistency
Now… as much as I enjoyed it, we have to address the elephant in the room:
KFC’s inconsistency.
I genuinely think I tried it on a good day — maybe the staff were in a great mood because the seasoning and sauce were generous. But I’ve had days where I get a chicken with just… a sprinkle of seasoning. Not cute.
So your experience may vary depending on which outlet you visit, what time of day, and the emotional state of whoever’s working the shaker that day.
But when it’s good, it’s GOOD.
Have you guys tried the Japanese Yuzu Chicken yet?
