When I first saw the ads popping up for the "new" McDonald's Ayam Goreng Mekdi Rasa Ori, my immediate knee-jerk reaction was: Wait, isn't original fried chicken already on the regular menu?
I mean, we’ve all seen it there sitting right next to the iconic Spicy option for years. But me being me, someone who can never resist trying something new (especially when it has that limited-time allure). I couldn't just walk past it. I ordered the 2-piece meal set because, honestly, why not?
And wow, was I in for a surprise.
The Big Taste Shift: Buttery Goodness vs. Black Pepper
If you’ve had the old Original version of Ayam Goreng Mekdi, you probably remember that distinct, subtle black peppery kick in the marinade. It was decent, but it always played second fiddle to the legendary Spicy version.
This new version, however? It hits completely differently.
They’ve clearly overhauled or refined the recipe because the flavor profile has taken a total 180-degree turn:
The Flavor: Gone is that heavy black pepper note. Instead, it’s replaced by this surprisingly rich, buttery taste that infuses the meat and the coating.
The Crunch: The batter feels noticeably crunchier and lighter than before. Every bite gives you that satisfying, golden-brown crunch without feeling greasy.
I honestly don't know if I just got a miraculously good batch of fried chicken or if McDonald's intentionally dialed up the butter notes, but if you've tried it recently, please tell me I’m not crazy, did you taste the butter in the batter too?!
A Controversial Take: Is Original Better Than Spicy Now?
Now, this might be a little controversial coming from someone who usually loves a good spice kick, but I’m just going to say it: I think I actually prefer the new Rasa Ori over the Spicy version now.
There, I said it!
The buttery crunch combo is just ridiculously addicting. It’s comforting, savory, and doesn't destroy your tastebuds with pure heat, allowing the juicy chicken flavor to really shine through.
For me, this batch was a 10/10 fried chicken experience. If you are a fan of that rich, buttery, extra-crunchy coating, you seriously need to give this updated Rasa Ori a shot before it disappears or changes again.

I’m already planning my next run to McD’s because I need to test my luck again. I have to verify if that rich buttery crunch is standard now or if I just struck gold with an accidental masterpiece of a batch.
