Did I Just Manifest This? A Honest Review of McDonald’s New "Burger Mekdi"

I am convinced I have the superpower of manifestation.

Not too long ago, I was sitting around wondering why major fast-food chains never try to replicate the legendary Malaysian burger gerai (street-style burger). It felt like an untapped goldmine. Then, lo and behold, I saw a digital billboard teaser right outside my house. My immediate thought? Oh, it’s actually happening.

McDonald’s Malaysia has officially stepped into the street-burger arena with their limited-time Burger Mekdi lineup.

The Overview: What is the Burger Mekdi?

McDonald’s is attempting to capture the chaotic perfection of a roadside burger stall. The core of this menu relies on a very local flavour profile: a heavy combination of shredded cabbage, mayonnaise, and McDonald’s iconic sweet-spicy chili sauce.

They offer four variations for this limited run:

  • Chili Mayo Beef Burger (Double patties)

  • Chili Mayo Beef Burger Special (Double patties + a fluffy folded egg)

  • Chili Mayo Chicken Burger (Crispy chicken patty)

  • Chili Mayo Chicken Burger Special (Crispy chicken patty + a fluffy folded egg)

The Taste Test: Does it Actually Taste Like a Burger Gerai?

When I finally got my hands on it, I was ready to see if it lived up to my manifestation.

The Verdict on Taste: Spot On.

It really does have that authentic burger gerai feel. The secret lies in the build. Instead of standard fast-food lettuce, they used plenty of shredded vegetables, drowned in that nostalgic, messy combination of mayo and chili sauce. If you close your eyes, the flavor profile genuinely takes you right back to your favorite late-night roadside stall. It is an incredibly interesting take on a local staple.

The Elephant in the Room: The Size.

While the taste hit the mark, the physical size left me scratching my head. When I first held it, I was honestly surprised by how small it was. Why is it so tiny? If you are expecting the hefty, foil-wrapped monster you get from a real street vendor, you might feel a bit short-changed here.

Final Thoughts: A Win for Malaysian Street Food Culture

Despite the small portion size, kudos to McDonald’s Malaysia for taking a risk. Bringing Malaysia's signature street burger concept into a massive global franchise is no small feat, and it is a fascinating experiment to witness.

That being said... burger gerai will always remain superior to any fast-food imitation. There is a magic to the roadside stall that can't fully be replicated in a commercial kitchen.

P.S. McD, if you are reading this and my manifestation powers are still active: Can we please bring back the Burger Nasi Lemak next? I am officially craving that crispy chicken patty smothered in authentic nasi lemak sambal!

My Rating: 3.5/5 🍔 (Great nostalgic flavours, but it needs to be bigger!)
