Foodgasm: Kopi Nisang

Hand holding a cup of iced kopi nisang

During a recent trip to Kuala Terengganu, I found myself trying something unexpected: Kopi Nisang. Now, I’m not a coffee drinker by any stretch of the imagination, but when Feyy told me how much he’d been wanting to try it, I couldn’t say no. After dropping off my mom at my sister’s place, we made a slight detour to Marang, just to sample this local favorite before heading back to KL.

First Impressions of Kopi Nisang

I’ll admit, I wasn’t exactly excited about trying coffee, but Kopi Nisang turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Unlike the strong, bitter brew I usually associate with coffee, this one had a unique twist that instantly caught my attention. The palm sugar (nisang) gave it a rich, sweet flavor that perfectly balanced the coffee’s natural bitterness. What made it stand out even more was a hint of saltiness, something I wasn’t expecting but ended up loving. I couldn’t quite figure out where the saltiness came from, but it added a layer of complexity to the drink that kept me sipping.

The Ambience: Dataran Batu Putih

Our coffee-tasting adventure took place at Dataran Batu Putih, a secluded and peaceful spot nestled in nature. It was definitely off the beaten path, which made the whole experience feel even more special. Surrounded by greenery and away from the usual hustle and bustle, it was the perfect place to sit back and enjoy a drink. The atmosphere was very laid-back—exactly what you’d want for a coffee break in a serene setting like this.

Would I Try Kopi Nisang Again?

As someone who usually avoids coffee, I can’t say I’m an expert, but Kopi Nisang was an exception for me. I’d definitely give it another go, especially because the palm sugar brings such a distinctive, caramel-like sweetness that I enjoyed. While I might not be able to say it’s the best coffee out there, it’s definitely a game-changer for someone like me who isn’t fond of traditional coffee flavors.

The Egg Waffle Delight

Oh, and let me not forget the egg waffle they served with palm sugar and mozzarella cheese filling. If there’s one thing that truly blew me away, it was this. The mix of sweet and savory from the palm sugar and gooey cheese was pure perfection. I honestly didn’t expect the combination to work so well, but it was the perfect snack to accompany the coffee.

Final Thoughts

If you’re ever in Kuala Terengganu or passing through Marang, make sure to hunt down a cup of Kopi Nisang. Even if you’re not a coffee fan like me, the blend of palm sugar sweetness, subtle bitterness, and that unexpected salty note might just win you over. Plus, don’t miss out on the egg waffle with mozzarella—it’s the kind of treat that stays with you long after the trip is over.
