If you know me, you’d know one thing for sure, I love my green tea and matcha. Always have. There’s just something so calming and grounding about it. But recently, during a visit to The Campus in Ampang, I had the chance to try something a little different, the Houjicha Latte from Niko Neko.
I’ve had Houjicha-flavoured ice cream before, years ago, and I remember being intrigued by its maltiness and subtle roasted character. But this was the first time I actually had it as a drink, freshly brewed and frothed into a creamy latte. And let me tell you, I’m obsessed.
So, what is Houjicha?
For those unfamiliar, Houjicha is a type of Japanese green tea that’s been roasted, unlike matcha which is steamed. This roasting process changes everything, it removes the bitterness, lowers the caffeine, and creates a beautifully mellow flavour. It’s earthy, nutty, and toasty, with hints of caramel and roasted nuts, and a smooth, almost smoky aroma.
The latte version from Niko Neko is creamy, warm, and comforting, like a hug in a cup. The roasted notes blend perfectly with the milk, creating a tea experience that feels luxurious but not overpowering.
Matcha is still the GOAT, but...
Let’s be real, matcha will always be #1 in my tea-loving heart. But this Houjicha latte? It’s earned its spot as a close second. It’s the kind of drink you want to have on a slow day, maybe while journaling, reading, or just watching the rain fall. It’s mellow and gentle, but still rich in flavour.
Honestly, I can’t wait to get myself another cup. It feels like I’ve unlocked a new level in my tea journey, and I’m loving it.
