Oriental Kopi Nasi Ayam Gepuk Review: Is It Real Ayam Gepuk or Just Sambal Berlado in Disguise?

When you hear Oriental Kopi, your mind probably jumps straight to their famous egg tarts, traditional Hainanese coffee, and local kopitiam classics. So when I saw Nasi Ayam Gepuk on their menu, I couldn't resist giving it a shot.

Let me just get straight to the point: It looks like Ayam Gepuk, but I really don't think it is Ayam Gepuk.

Here is my honest breakdown of why this dish feels more like a fast-food twist than the real deal.

The Sambal Situation: Goreng Berlado in Disguise?

The heart and soul of any legitimate Ayam Gepuk lies in its freshly smashed, oily, garlic-heavy, and intensely spicy nut sambal. But the moment I took a bite of Oriental Kopi’s version, something felt completely off.

  • The Sambal Profile: The sambal itself is nothing like what authentic Ayam Gepuk sambal should be. Instead of that signature raw chili and cashew/peanut oil punch, it tastes much more like a sambal goreng berlado.

  • The Look vs. Taste: It’s basically like eating fried chicken topped with sambal berlado that’s trying to dress up as Ayam Gepuk just because they threw in some peanut/nut sauce paste on top.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the dish itself tastes bad! The fried chicken is decent, and the flavor profile works as a general rice dish. But calling it Ayam Gepuk? That's a bit of a stretch.

An "Iterated" Gepuk for Mild Spice Tolerances

This whole experience actually reminded me a lot of my recent review at Gepuklah. It feels like another iteration or modern reinterpretation of Ayam Gepuk, rather than satisfying a craving for the authentic Indonesian street-food original.

In my opinion, Oriental Kopi crafted this version specifically to cater to families, kids, or foodies who want the experience of eating Ayam Gepuk without having their tastebuds completely incinerated by actual spicy sambal.

If you are someone who enjoys a mild, sweet-savory sambal and can't handle high spice levels, then honestly, this dish is made for you.

Gepuk or Hempuk?

As someone who genuinely loves a fiery, nose-bleeding, authentic Ayam Gepuk sambal, this fell pretty short of the mark for me.

Authentic Ayam Gepuk Score: 5/10 ⭐️

It's a safe, non-spicy entry point for beginners, but die-hard Gepuk purists might want to stick to their usual street stalls instead!
