Yong Tau Foo Mek Kembang Review: Worth the Trip to Batu Caves / Selayang?
Yong Tau Foo (YTF) is one of those ultimate comfort foods that hits the spot when you want something light, warm, and filling. Recently, Feyy and I made a trip over to the Selayang/Batu Caves area to check out Yong Tau Foo Sumbat Mek Kembang (depan MBSB Bank Batu Caves).
The shop’s name basically highlights their specialty a huge variety of lauk-lauk stuffed with fish paste (isi ikan). To be completely honest, bila korang mula-mula tengok, the choices look super overwhelming and endless! But once you look closer, you kind of realize that most of the options are essentially variations of the same fish paste stuffing inside different toppings and veggies. Still, the presentation looks super appetizing!
Rebus or Goreng? The "Healthy" Route
Selepas korang dah siap pilih korang punya lauk-lauk, you get to choose your preparation method: Rebus (Soup/Boiled) or Goreng (Fried).
Since Feyy and I were feeling-feeling eating healthy that day, kitorang decided to go with the rebus option!
The Soup (Sup): Sup dia surprisingly sedap and flavorful! It’s comforting, light, and blends well with all the boiled stuffed items.
The Dipping Sauce (Sos Cicah): I swear this was the real highlight. The dipping sauce was so delicious! Pedas, tapi you can still taste that subtle sweetness from the sweet sauce/kicap. Every dip hits just right.
Is It Worth Travelling For?
All in all, it was a nice, sedap, and satisfying meal!
If you live nearby (Selayang/Batu Caves): You should definitely pop by and give it a try for your night-time YTF cravings.
If you live far away: Honest talk, it’s okay to swing by sekali-sekala if you happen to be in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to drive across town for it. At the end of the day, you can probably get a very similar quality YTF closer to your own neighborhood.
