Health & Beauty: How Often Should You Shampoo?

Ah, the age-old haircare question: How often should you shampoo your hair?

Some say every day. Others swear by once a week. And then there’s us, living in the hot, humid, sometimes rainy, and always sweaty climate of Southeast Asia, trying to figure out what’s right for our scalps and our sanity.

Let’s break it down, once and for all.

Southeast Asia Climate = Sweat + Oil + Humidity

In countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand, the weather can be unforgiving on the scalp. One minute you’re stepping out with fresh hair, and 10 minutes later, your scalp is sweating like you just ran a marathon. Add in exposure to pollution, dust, and helmet hair (hello, motorbike riders!), and it's no surprise that our scalp feels greasy way faster than in other parts of the world.

But does that mean you need to shampoo every day?

The Case For Frequent Shampooing

If your scalp gets very oily, or if you sweat a lot due to outdoor activities or workouts, shampooing daily might be necessary. Especially if you:

  • Live in a city with high pollution

  • Wear a hijab or head covering for long hours

  • Use styling products regularly

  • Have fine or thin hair that gets greasy quickly

In this case, go for a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo that cleanses without stripping your scalp's natural oils. You want to clean, not over-dry.

The Case Against Over-Shampooing

While it’s tempting to scrub your scalp clean every day, over-washing can do more harm than good even in humid climates. Shampooing too often can:

  • Strip your scalp of natural oils

  • Trigger rebound oil production (making it oilier)

  • Cause dryness, itchiness, or flakiness

  • Damage your hair shaft, making it brittle or frizzy

If your hair is dry, curly, wavy, colored, or chemically treated, you may want to shampoo less frequently, around 2–3 times a week, and co-wash (using conditioner only) in between if needed.

So… What’s the Right Balance?

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But here’s a guide you can tweak to suit your hair type and lifestyle:

Hair Type / Lifestyle

Ideal Shampoo Frequency

Oily scalp / daily workouts / city life

Every day or every other day

Normal hair / moderate activity

2–3 times a week

Dry, damaged, or curly hair

1–2 times a week

Sensitive scalp

2 times a week, max

Pro tip: In between shampoos, try scalp rinsing with just water, or use dry shampoo (if you're not sensitive to it) to absorb excess oil without overwashing.

Personal Tip: Listen to Your Scalp, Not Just the Weather

I used to think the humidity meant I had to shampoo every day, but once I switched to a more balanced routine and chose the right shampoo for my scalp, my hair actually became less oily and more manageable. I now wash every 2–3 days, depending on my activity, and use scalp treatments once a week to keep things in check.

Living in Southeast Asia means we deal with a climate that’s not exactly kind to our scalp, but that doesn’t mean we should be harsh on it. The goal isn’t squeaky-clean hair, it’s a balanced, healthy scalp. Find a routine that works for you, invest in a good shampoo that suits your scalp type, and don’t be afraid to adjust as your hair (and lifestyle) changes.
