RPDR 17: Episode 9 Rucap

Writer's picture: Faiz FaisalFaiz Faisal

Another design challenge, and this time, it’s a tribute to the iconic Betsey Johnson! Can you believe she’s 82? I mean, still doing splits at that age? I’ll have what she’s having. This week also saw the return of the reading challenge, but honestly, the reads this season were just okay. After 17 seasons, it’s hard to come up with fresh and original shade. Suzie Toot won the reading challenge, and she was definitely proud of that win.

After winning the reading challenge, Suzie got the first pick for the design challenge. The queens had to create looks inspired by three of Betsey Johnson’s iconic collections: Punk Grunge Flappers, Betsey’s Prom, and Pre-nup. Here’s how the groups were divided:

Punk Grunge Flappers:

Suzie Toot

Lydia B Kollins

Jewels Sparkles

Betsey’s Prom:

Lana Ja’Rae

Onya Nurve

Kori King

Pre-nup:

Lexi Love

Sam Star

Arrietty

A hilarious moment happened when Suzie chose Lydia to pick next, and instead of choosing Kori (her boyfriend), Lydia went with Lexi. Suzie quickly called her out with, “Is your boyfriend gonna be mad?” and Lydia’s reaction? Pure panic. Girl, how do you forget about your own man?

Runway & Talent Show Highlights

Some queens truly stood out on the runway:

Jewels Sparkles: Betsey herself said this was the most Betsey Johnson look of the night! The way Jewels cut up the faux fur and transformed it into a scarf? Genius.

Lexi Love: This was giving Julia! Inspired by Julia Fox, Lexi proved once again that she knows her references. First, she channeled Moschino in the first design challenge, and now this? Obsessed.

Arrietty: The clean execution of this look was stunning, though it didn’t scream Betsey Johnson. Still, a beautifully crafted garment.

Lip Sync

Jewels Sparkles took home the win, but personally, I think Lexi should’ve won this week while Jewels should have snatched the last two episodes. But hey, at least Jewels finally got her well-deserved win!

For the bottom two, we got drama—Lydia and Kori, the Drag Race couple, had to lip sync for their lives. And they really sealed the deal with a smooch (or was it more than that?) on the main stage. Ultimately, Kori lost the battle and had to sashay away.

Next Week

Next week, the queens will be put to the test in a villain roast, and we’re getting special appearances from some of Drag Race’s most iconic villainesses—Kandy Muse, Mistress Isabelle Brooks, and Plane Jane. Expect shade, chaos, and plenty of drama!

Final Thoughts

This episode had a solid challenge, fun drama, and a long-overdue win for Jewels. Next week’s roast should be a gag-worthy showdown, and I can’t wait to see how the queens handle the pressure. Who do you think will slay the roast? Let’s discuss!
