When you hear the word cosplay, what comes to mind?

For most people, it's anime conventions, comic book events, or fans dressing up as their favorite fictional characters. But cosplay is much more than putting on a costume. The word itself comes from the combination of "costume" and "play," where fans recreate the appearance, personality, and sometimes even the mannerisms of characters from anime, manga, movies, television, comics, and video games.

Over the years, cosplay has evolved into an incredible art form. From handcrafted armor to meticulously sewn costumes, cosplayers spend months perfecting every little detail. It's a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and fandom.

But today, I want to look at cosplay from a different angle.

I genuinely think cosplay is a fashion style.

Fictional Characters Have Better Wardrobes Than Most of Us

Let's be honest.

Some of the best-dressed people... aren't even real.

Fashion designers constantly look to architecture, art, music, and history for inspiration. So why shouldn't we look to fictional characters?

After all, they exist in worlds where creativity has no limits.

Anime, video games, comics, and films allow costume designers and illustrators to imagine silhouettes, proportions, colors, and materials that wouldn't normally exist in everyday fashion. That's what makes their wardrobes so memorable.

Who wouldn't want to dress like Sailor Moon with her iconic sailor uniform?

Or channel the confidence of Cyclops with his sleek superhero aesthetic?

Or maybe you're drawn to the polished sophistication of Andy Sachs from The Devil Wears Prada after her unforgettable fashion transformation.

These characters have become style icons in their own right.

Cosplay Is Fashion Inspiration

Some people scroll Instagram looking for outfit inspiration.

Others browse Pinterest.

Some copy their favorite celebrities.

Cosplayers?

They look at fictional universes.

And honestly, I don't think that's any different.

Fashion has always been about inspiration. Whether you're recreating a runway look, taking notes from your favorite influencer, or dressing like your favorite anime character, you're still translating someone else's aesthetic into your own wardrobe.

Cosplay simply starts from a different source.

Of course, there's one important thing to remember.
