The Art of the Outfit: Why I Love Both Plain and Printed Fabrics (And How I Style Them)

When it comes to building a wardrobe, fashion lovers usually fall into one of two camps: the minimalist plain-fabric purists or the bold printed-pattern enthusiasts.

For plain fabrics, the beauty lies in total creative freedom, the absence of patterns gives you an open canvas to layer, play with texture, and go wild with accessories. On the other side, printed fabrics do all the heavy lifting for you. The pattern is the statement, meaning you can keep your styling minimal and still look completely put together.

Personally? I refuse to choose. I am 100% team both!

How I wear plain versus printed fabrics completely depends on the vibe of the day, but I have a few golden rules for making both work effortlessly in year-round warm weather.

How I Style Plain Fabrics: Depth, Layers, and Structural Details

When I opt for plain garments, I never want the outfit to look flat or basic. My secret? Intricate design and architectural texture.

I naturally gravitate toward plain pieces that feature extra depth, think subtle ruffles, deep pleats, asymmetrical cuts, utility pockets, or exposed zipper details. These structural elements give a solid-colored piece personality without needing a bold print to draw the eye.

My favorite way to style plain garments includes:

  • Strategic Layering: Pairing a crisp, asymmetrical white top over tailored bottoms, or layering lightweight open vests to create interesting depth.

  • Going Heavy on Accessories: Because there are no patterns competing for attention, this is when I bring out my statement jewelry, structured bags, and bold footwear.

How I Style Printed Fabrics: Less Is Always More

When it comes to printed fabrics, my philosophy flips completely. If the print is vibrant or intricate, I keep the silhouette and styling as simple as possible.

I never want to lose the actual artwork or pattern of the fabric under a mountain of extra layers. Most of the time, I'll style a heavy print as a clean top-and-bottom combo or a fluid single-piece outfit, letting the pattern take center stage.

For printed pieces, my go-to styling rule is:

  • Minimalist Accessories: Sleek, understated jewelry and neutral shoes so the print does all the talking.

What’s Your Fabric Personality?

Whether you’re dressing for a chill day out or curating an outfit for the weekend, both plain and printed fabrics bring something totally unique to your wardrobe rotation.
