I’ve been revisiting old songs again and today What Would You Do? by City High came up — and wow… I’m actually shocked at how differently I hear it now that I’m older. Growing up, I used to sing and dance to this like it was just another catchy early 2000s bop. I had zero clue what the song was actually talking about. The beat was fun, the hook was catchy, and that was enough for kid-me.

But listening to it now? It hits completely differently.

The story behind the song is heavy — a woman doing whatever she can to feed her child because life left her with no other options. And suddenly, I’m sitting here questioning why I was vibing to this like it was a celebratory anthem. The contrast between the upbeat production and the heartbreaking reality in the lyrics is honestly… wild.

It’s one of those moments where you realize how much music can go over your head when you’re young — and how much it can smack you with perspective when you’re older. This story still happens today. People are out there struggling, surviving, doing whatever they can just to get through the day.

And it really reminds me that the least we can do is show a little more empathy and compassion toward the people around us. We honestly never know what someone is carrying — what battles they’re fighting quietly, what choices they’ve been forced into, what pain they’re hiding behind a brave face.

So yeah… growing up changes how you hear things. And this song? It’s one of those that grows heavier the more you understand the world.
