Let me be honest: the first time I listened to Blade of Grass from Lady Gaga’s Mayhem album, it didn’t hit me immediately. But to be fair — it was late at night, I was tired, and I was staying up just to catch Mother’s latest drop the moment it went live (as we do).
So that first listen? It went over my head. But the next morning, when the sun was up and my brain was finally functioning, I gave it another go — and that’s when the magic of this song began to sink in.
Blade of Grass is delicate, sincere, and deeply emotional. Knowing that Gaga wrote this song for her fiancé adds an even more tender layer to it. The vulnerability in her voice, the lyrics, the stripped-down production — it all just feels like a love letter wrapped in melody.
But the moment that really changed everything for me was hearing it live at Mayhem Singapura just last Monday. I was already emotional walking into the venue, but the second this song started — I was sobbing. It wasn’t just the performance. It was the moment Gaga wiped away the little tears that streamed down her own face mid-performance. That’s when I felt it in my chest. This wasn’t just a song. It was a piece of her heart. And in that moment, she shared it with all of us.
As a Little Monster, that’s what makes Blade of Grass so special. It’s intimate and timeless — a song that holds you gently. A celebration of love that’s soft but powerful. If You and I was the toast, Blade of Grass is the vow. It’s the wedding anthem we didn’t know we needed — but now that we have it, it’s hard to imagine love without it.
So yes, Mother Monster — we will wrap that blade of grass around our fingers, and we will make it last. 💍
What did you think when you first heard it? And if you were at Mayhem Singapura too — did you cry with me?
