Whenever Madonna releases a new album, I always remind myself of one thing: never expect her to repeat herself. Reinvention has always been her greatest strength, and with Confessions II, she's revisiting one of the most beloved eras of her career while still pushing herself forward.
Naturally, comparisons with Confessions on a Dance Floor are inevitable. That album is legendary for a reason.
I remember discovering Confessions on a Dance Floor back in high school. Back then, we didn't have streaming services where every album was just a click away. We relied on MTV and the radio, so naturally songs like Hung Up and Sorry became the soundtrack of that era. It wasn't until years later that I listened to the album from start to finish and truly appreciated how cohesive and brilliant it really was.
To this day, I still consider it one of Madonna's greatest albums, sitting comfortably alongside Ray of Light as my personal favorites.
So, does Confessions II reach those same heights?
Not quite.
The album is incredibly cohesive—perhaps a little too cohesive. Madonna and Stuart Price clearly wanted this to feel like one continuous DJ set, and they absolutely achieved that. The songs flow seamlessly into one another, almost to the point where the entire album feels like one long track.
While I appreciate the artistic vision, I do find myself missing those standout moments that instantly demand your attention. The original Confessions was packed with songs that each had their own identity while still fitting into the larger narrative. Here, everything blends together so smoothly that sometimes it's difficult to distinguish where one song ends and another begins.
But then...
"Danceteria."
This is the song.
The moment it came on, I immediately knew it was going to be my favorite from the album. It captures everything I love about Madonna when she's at her best—infectious grooves, irresistible energy, and a beat that makes you want to get up and move without thinking twice.
It feels like the closest thing to the magic of the original Confessions on a Dance Floor. There's a confidence and playfulness in Danceteria that cuts through the album's hypnotic atmosphere, giving it that burst of excitement I found myself craving.
Will it replace Hung Up or Sorry in my all-time Madonna rankings? Probably not.
But it absolutely earns its place among my favorite tracks from this new era.
Overall, Confessions II is a polished, stylish, and artistically confident record. I can understand why critics are praising its cohesion and ambition. Personally, though, I still prefer the more immediate, euphoric highs of the original album.
Even so, if Danceteria is any indication, the Queen of Pop still knows exactly how to own the dance floor.
What about you? Have you listened to Confessions II yet? And if you have, which track has been living rent-free in your head?
