Song Of The Week: Disease - Lady Gaga

As a longtime Little Monster, I’ve seen Lady Gaga go through countless transformations—each era bringing something new, exciting, and a little unexpected. Her latest lead single, Disease, feels like a masterpiece crafted from the lessons of her past and the bold vision of her future. To me, it’s like an evolved, darker sibling to Bad Romance, a song that introduced the world to the powerhouse that is Gaga. With Disease, her sound is more mature, edgier, and touches a new realm of sophistication. And yet, not everyone in the fanbase seems to embrace it for what it is—an evolution.

I’ve noticed lately that parts of the fanbase have become so focused on chart performance and instant success that the art itself gets overshadowed. When did we, as Little Monsters, start judging her work based on numbers and not the sheer magic she brings to the table? I’m not saying everyone has to love every song, but isn’t the essence of supporting an artist respecting their journey, wherever it takes them?

As someone also in the creative industry, I get it. To grow, you can’t stay in one place; you have to evolve, to experiment, and yes, sometimes, to stumble. Gaga’s journey through jazz, pop, and electronic was never about pandering—it was about pushing boundaries, trying new sounds, and finding her voice in new forms. It’s this dedication to exploration that keeps her music fresh, and I genuinely respect her for that. Even if I don’t listen to her jazz records, I support her for creating them. She’s not just an artist who churns out hits; she’s a visionary who isn’t afraid to take risks.

For me, Disease beautifully embodies Gaga’s return to her roots, yet it also reflects the lessons she’s picked up along the way. It has hints of ARTPOP, Born This Way, and even Chromatica, but it’s not trapped by any of these eras. It feels familiar, yet it’s entirely new—a sound that only an artist with her experience and creative courage could create. That’s what makes Gaga’s music special; it isn’t just a reflection of her current state, but also of the journey she’s taken to get there.

I remember when Born This Way came out and how it made me feel seen and understood in ways that few songs had before. From that moment, I realized that Gaga makes music not just to climb the charts, but to connect with her fans on a deep, personal level. Each song is like a love letter to us, a reminder that we are not alone, that we are valid, and that someone out there sees us for who we are.

So, my fellow Little Monsters, let’s take a step back and embrace the entirety of Gaga’s journey. Let’s be grateful that she’s still here, creating, evolving, and sharing her art with us. Numbers and charts may come and go, but the feeling she gives us, the magic in her music—that’s forever. Disease is just one chapter in Gaga’s story, and I, for one, can’t wait to see where she takes us next.
