Ava Max just released her new album Don’t Click Play, and honestly, I feel like she deserves more credit than she gets. The title track itself addresses the chatter around her career, people saying she’s the queen of sampling or calling her a Lady Gaga imitation. Sure, the blonde hair might spark comparisons, but to me, Ava has always been her own person. Her sound, her energy, and her artistry stand apart.
As for the sampling debate? I don’t mind it one bit. If it’s done tastefully and the original artists are credited, then why not? Music has always been about reimagining and reinventing. People can call it lazy, but for me, if the end result is a great song, that’s all that matters.
Listening to Don’t Click Play, I couldn’t help but notice it carries a vibe similar to Lose Control by Meduza, Becky Hill, and Goodboys. I’m not sure if that was intentional sampling or just sonic coincidence, but it definitely gave me that same infectious energy.
At the end of the day, I really hope things turn out well for Ava. She’s a talented artist who deserves to shine, and I’ll be rooting for her every step of the way.
