If you haven’t had no na on repeat lately, what are you even listening to?
Signed under 88rising, this 4-member Indonesian powerhouse, Christy, Esther, Baila, and Shaz has been quietly (and now loudly) laying the groundwork for world domination. I’ve been locked in with their music for a minute now. When "work" dropped, my immediate reaction was: Okay, this girl group from Indonesia is going to make it massive globally. Then came "rollerblade", which went viral practically overnight.
Now, with their newest single "honk!", I’m 100% convinced: no na is reaching global superstardom, and there is no stopping them.
Local Flare Meets Global Pop Production
What I love most about no na is how effortlessly they blend polished, international pop production with unapologetic local Indonesian culture. They aren't watering down their roots to appeal to Western audiences, they’re making their heritage the coolest thing in the room.
We heard it when they wove traditional gamelan chimes and ceng-ceng cymbals into their earlier hits like "work" and "rollerblade". But with "honk!", they took it to a whole new level of fun.
The song literally sample-stacks the iconic, chaotic sounds of Indonesia’s street transport culture from angkot (public minibuses) to the legendary melodic horn sounds of buses and lorries. If you were around for the viral "Om Telolet Om" internet craze back in the day (when kids stood by the roadside yelling at bus drivers to honk their musical horns!), hearing it flipped into a heavy-bass, club-ready bop is pure serotonin. Lines like "Get on the angkot, beep-beep" and "Sabang sampai Merauke, New York, Tokyo to L.A." showcase their whole mission: taking local street culture straight to global mainstages.
Out of their trio of massive singles so far, "honk!" is easily their most fun release yet.
The Modern Streaming Formula: My Only Hot Take 🔥
If I have one tiny bone to pick with no na's releases so far, it’s that most of their tracks are super short, we’re talking under 3 minutes!
I catch myself wanting a full 4-minute jam where we get an extra bridge or a extended beat drop. But let’s be real: this is the modern streaming formula at work. In today's TikTok-driven music landscape, shorter tracks equal higher replay rates and bigger stream numbers. So while I selfishly want longer songs because they’re that good, I get the strategy and honestly, hitting repeat 10 times in a row is no chore anyway.
Next Stop: island girl Album Release
With a perfect 10/10 streak across "work", "rollerblade", and now "honk!", my expectations for their upcoming debut album, island girl, are through the roof. no na is proving that authentic cultural pride paired with infectious pop hooks is the ultimate recipe for global success.
