I discovered this song in the most random way — on my way to do laundry, half-awake, and suddenly Hitz.fm started playing this beat that instantly grabbed my attention. It had that late 00’s, early 10’s vibe: catchy, bouncy, and nostalgic in the best way. Without even thinking, I pulled out my phone and asked, “What song is this?” and boom — NYK, I’m the Worst popped up.

At first, I honestly thought NYK was some K-pop idol going solo. The production, the vibe, the polish — everything sounded very international. So imagine my surprise when I learned that NYK is actually a homegrown Malaysian act. From Penang! Like?? Excuse me?? The talent!

I was genuinely shocked in the best way possible. The beat alone had me hooked and mumbling along even though I didn’t know the lyrics yet. It just had that infectious energy that makes you want to move — the kind of song that makes a mundane errand suddenly feel like a music video moment.

And honestly, discovering NYK this way made me realize something: our local music scene has so much quality, but not nearly enough exposure. If I hadn’t caught this by chance on Hitz.fm, I wouldn’t have known about it at all. Huge shoutout to them for actually playing local talents consistently — because clearly, there’s a whole world here I’ve been sleeping on.

So yeah… I think it’s time I start digging deeper into our local artists.

If this is the indicator of what’s happening in Malaysia right now, then wow — we’re in a really, really good place.

What do you guys think? Anyone else a fan of NYK?
