The year was 2008. I was in my final year of secondary school, drowning in textbooks and drowning out the world while preparing for the biggest exams of my life. I was desperate for an outlet, a momentary escape from the stress. For me, that escape lived in the local cyber cafe.
Between updating my MySpace profile and hunting for new tracks to fuel my late-night study sessions, I stumbled upon a name that would change my entire perspective on pop culture: Lady Gaga.
The second the opening synths of "Just Dance" hit my headphones, I was gone. I wasn't just listening; I was obsessed. When I finally saw the music video, it was game over. Gaga wasn’t like any other pop star at the time. She wasn’t trying to be the "pretty girl" or the "hot girl" next door. She was unapologetically herself—messy, avant-garde, and completely fearless.
I remember putting that song on a permanent loop. My classmates were probably ready to stage an intervention because I wouldn't stop pestering them to listen to it. I knew right then that she was the artist of my generation.
Fast forward 18 years later, and Mother Monster is still proving me right. From the lightning bolt painted on her face to the silver screen, she keeps giving us something to look forward to. In an industry where trends die in a week, her career longevity is the kind of miracle most artists pray for but never achieve. She didn’t just survive the pop landscape; she redefined it.
Here’s to another 18 years of celebrating pure, unfiltered artistry. We love you, Gaga!
