Let’s talk about Ava Max’s latest single, “Lovin Myself.”
Straight out of the gate, this sounds like classic Ava — upbeat, confident, very much in her wheelhouse. It’s got that self-empowerment vibe she’s known for, and the production? Catchy. No doubt. But here’s the thing… it also feels kind of dated?
I’m not saying it’s bad — it’s far from it. Ava delivers what she does best, and that deserves credit. But there’s something about Lovin Myself that feels like it’s trying to ride a wave that already passed. You know that early 2000s sound that came back strong a few years ago? Think Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, or The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights era. That revival already had its moment — and now it kind of feels like Ava’s just missing that timing.
That said, I still think Ava has a lane — and she should just lean fully into it. One thing about her that has always worked? Her ability to sample a hit, flip it, and make it her own. It’s a formula that might not please the purists, but if it works, why fight it? If anything, I feel like that’s what people expect from her at this point — fun, recognizable, and loud pop songs that don’t take themselves too seriously. And honestly? That’s okay.
I know some people are getting tired of the sample trend, but if Ava can keep turning them into pop anthems, then maybe that’s her sweet spot.
What do you think about Lovin Myself? Is it a solid bop or a missed opportunity?
