Today I want to talk about Promise This by Cheryl.
Can you believe this song is 16 years old? Oh damn. I’m aging by the minute just typing that out.
I was at the office on a random weekday, doing my usual thing, letting Spotify run on suggestive shuffle — not really paying attention — when suddenly I heard:
“Alouette-uette-uette
Alouette-uette-uette
Alouette-uette-uette
Plumerai les ailes…”
And I literally froze.
I was like, hold on… what is this familiar sound? Why does this feel like a certified BOP entering the room unannounced?
I quickly switched tabs and there it was. Promise This.
Without hesitation, I smashed the “Add to Favorites” button and immediately went to rewatch the music video because I vividly remembered it being such a moment. The dramatic pause. The sharp poses. The choreography. That energy. It was peak late 2000s / early 2010s pop perfection.
There’s something about that era that just hits differently. The music was dramatic but fun. Emotional but still danceable. The visuals were theatrical without trying too hard. And as a teenager living through it? It felt like we were in the golden age of pop.
Rewatching the MV now, it still holds up in that nostalgic way. Maybe it’s a little dated — but that’s the charm. Dated songs aren’t flaws; they’re time machines. The second that intro plays, I’m transported back to simpler days. No adult responsibilities. No financial spreadsheets. Just vibes, dance routines in my bedroom, and dreaming big.
And honestly? Those were some of the best years of my life.
This one is definitely going on repeat until I accidentally rediscover another nostalgic hit and the cycle starts all over again. But for now, Promise This has reclaimed her throne in my playlist.
What’s a song that instantly teleports you back to your teenage years?
