Hey everyone.

Today I want to talk about a song that's been living in my head for a very long time. It's "Take a Picture" by Filter.

I first heard this song when I was only nine years old. Back then, I didn't care about lyrics or hidden meanings. If a song sounded good, that was enough for me. Take a Picture had this mellow, dreamy atmosphere that instantly pulled me in. It felt calming. Peaceful. It became one of those songs that simply made me feel good without me ever questioning why.

Fast forward twenty-six years.

I'm 35 now, and listening to this song today feels like hearing it for the very first time.

Life happened.

I lost my father when I was 22 years old—that awkward age where you're expected to become an adult and somehow know what you're doing. The truth is, I didn't. I was still figuring out who I was, what I wanted, and how to navigate a world that suddenly felt a lot bigger without him in it.

There have been moments I'm proud of, and there have been plenty that I'm not.

I've made mistakes. I've hurt people. I've taken wrong turns. And like everyone else, I'm still learning. Still growing. Still trying to become a better version of myself every single day.

So now, whenever I hear Richard Patrick sing,

"Hey Dad, what do you think about your son now?"

…it hits me like a ton of bricks.

To me, those words feel like the most honest cry for help. They're what you ask yourself after you've messed up. After you've disappointed yourself. When you're wondering whether the people you love—especially the ones who are no longer here—would still be proud of the person you've become.

What makes the song even more powerful is knowing that Richard Patrick wrote it during one of the darkest periods of his life. He has shared that the lyric came from wondering what his own father would think of the mistakes he was making at the time. Suddenly, the song isn't just beautiful—it becomes painfully human.

And maybe that's why it resonates with me so deeply today.

It's strange how music grows alongside us. The same song that once represented calm and comfort to a nine-year-old kid now perfectly captures the emotional storms of adulthood.

But maybe that's also the beauty of music.

It waits for us.

It patiently sits there until we're finally old enough to understand what it was trying to tell us all along.

So every time I listen to Take a Picture now, I can't help but think of my dad. I wonder what he'd say if he could see me today. I'd like to believe he'd tell me that although I've made mistakes, I've never stopped trying to become a better person.

And perhaps... that's enough.

What's a song that means something completely different to you now than it did when you first heard it?
