Okay, let’s get into it. Mariah Carey is back with her new single “Type Dangerous” from her upcoming 16th studio album, and let me tell you — this is classic Mimi. When I say classic, I mean the hip-hop, R&B, pop crossover Mariah that I personally live for. Yes, her ballads are iconic and untouchable (We Belong Together supremacy forever), but give me Honey, It’s Like That, and Touch My Body any day and I’ll be dancing in my room like it’s 2005.
So when I first hit play on Type Dangerous, I knew instantly — this is the Mariah I grew up loving. It’s catchy, smooth, and oh-so-Mariah. Is it groundbreaking? No. Is it one of her career-defining ballads? Also no. But is it fun, flirty, and danceable? Absolutely.
Now let’s talk about that music video. Because… girl.
Joseph Kahn teased that the video would include some “earth-shattering surprise” and naturally, we all started spiraling. A Beyoncé cameo? A Nicki reunion? A recreation of Heartbreaker in HD? Nope. We got Mr. Beast. And no shade to him, but… Mimi said it best: “I don’t know him.” I mean, cute cameo I guess, but earth-shattering? More like screen-scratching.
That said, I do appreciate the nostalgic 2000s visuals. There’s glitter, there’s lip gloss, there’s wind machines — all the makings of a Mariah throwback moment. So even if the surprise was a bit of a letdown, the vibes? Still very much on point.
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room — Type Dangerous isn’t charting like her classics. But honestly? I don’t think it needs to. This one’s for the Lambs, and even though I’m not officially in the fan club, I do love me some Mariah. And this track definitely scratches that nostalgic itch.
So what do you think about Type Dangerous? Are we spinning it on repeat or skipping straight to the next album teaser?
