Last weekend, I went on a staycation with my high school friends. It’s hard to believe it’s been 14 years since we said goodbye to those carefree days. Time has flown by, but this little getaway gave us a chance to hit the pause button and look back.
We spent hours catching up, sharing embarrassing moments we used to dread but now laugh about, and reminiscing over the hilarious mischief we got into back then. It was so comforting to relive those moments with the same people who were there, just as they were 14 years ago.
High school felt like a different lifetime—a time when life was less complicated, and our biggest worries were homework deadlines and whose class would win the next 'kelas paling cantik'. It’s funny how, back then, we couldn’t wait to grow up, and now we’d do anything to go back for just one day.
While chatting about our high school days, I kept hearing Underneath It All by No Doubt playing in my head. It’s an oldie that predates my high school years, but it holds this magical ability to transport me back to a time when life was all about playing outside until sunset, racing to finish homework before my favorite TV show, and dreaming about what adulthood would be like. Oh, the irony!
Listening to that song now, I’m reminded of a simpler, lighter time—a time without the weight of responsibilities, deadlines, and decisions that come with adulthood. I often find myself longing for the days when life didn’t revolve around calendars, commitments, and endless notifications.
But here’s the thing: as much as I miss those carefree days, I also appreciate where life has taken me. These memories wouldn’t be as precious if we hadn’t moved forward and grown into who we are today.
Still, it’s nice to hit the rewind button now and then, even if only in our minds or over coffee with old friends. That staycation was more than just a getaway—it was a reminder that while life may not be simple anymore, the connections we make along the way are timeless.
So, here’s to the good ol’ days and the beautiful mess of the present. And here’s to Underneath It All for always taking me back to where it all began.
