As 2024 comes to a close, it's the perfect time to look back at some of the cinematic gems that made this year memorable. From edge-of-your-seat thrillers to enchanting musicals, here's my pick of the top 5 movies of 2024. Buckle up as I take you through these cinematic highlights and why they left such an impression on me.

5. Alien: Romulus

The Alien franchise has always been a masterclass in blending horror and science fiction, and Alien: Romulus is no exception. The claustrophobic tension, chillingly realistic Xenomorph designs, and the return to the atmospheric roots of the series made this movie an unforgettable experience.

Storyline: A new crew on an exploratory mission finds themselves at the mercy of a terrifying new strain of Xenomorphs.

Standout Moment: The sequence where the protagonist uses their wits and raw courage to outmaneuver the alien in a zero-gravity chase left me breathless.

Why It’s a Favorite: The perfect balance of nostalgia and innovation gave Alien: Romulus a gripping edge that felt both familiar and fresh.

4. Gladiator II

Ridley Scott’s sequel to the legendary Gladiator was bold, intense, and action-packed from start to finish. While it had some narrative hiccups, the overall execution was stunning.

Storyline: The movie picks up years after Maximus’ demise, focusing on Lucius as he navigates the perils of the Roman Empire.

Character Highlight: Paul Mescal’s portrayal of Lucius was nuanced, bringing depth and raw emotion to the character.

Villain Analysis: The twin emperors were compelling antagonists, even if their backstory could have been better fleshed out.

Why It’s a Favorite: The large-scale battles and emotional undertones delivered an exhilarating cinematic experience.

3. Wicked: Part I

This musical extravaganza was everything I hoped it would be and more. The stunning visuals and enchanting performances transported me straight to the magical land of Oz.

Storyline: The movie dives deep into the origins of Elphaba and Glinda, showing how their lives intertwined before The Wizard of Oz.

Soundtrack Review: With classics like "Defying Gravity" and new original tracks, the music elevated the storytelling to a whole new level.

Why It’s a Favorite: The emotional depth and vibrant energy of Wicked made it a feast for both the eyes and ears.

2. Smile 2

After the surprise success of the first Smile, the sequel had big shoes to fill—and it delivered! This psychological horror delved even deeper into its chilling mythology.

Storyline: A continuation of the curse, this time with even more terrifying consequences for those who encounter it.

Standout Moment: The final sequence, where reality and hallucination blur, was one of the most terrifying scenes I’ve ever seen.

Why It’s a Favorite: Smile 2 proved that horror sequels can be just as innovative and haunting as the originals.

1. The Wild Robot

My top pick of 2024 is the heartwarming adaptation of The Wild Robot. This film beautifully captured the essence of Peter Brown’s beloved novel, creating a story that resonated with viewers of all ages.

Storyline: Roz, a robot stranded on a remote island, learns to adapt to her surroundings and form bonds with the local wildlife.

Emotional Depth: The movie’s exploration of identity, empathy, and connection left me in tears multiple times.

Why It’s a Favorite: Rarely does a movie manage to be so thought-provoking, visually stunning, and emotionally moving all at once. The Wild Robot is a testament to the power of storytelling.

Final Thoughts

2024 has truly been a year of cinematic brilliance, offering stories that thrilled, moved, and inspired. Each of these films brought something unique to the table, making them worthy of celebration.
