Learning New Language

Why I Decided to Learn Spanish (Just So I Can Understand Bad Bunny)
Have you ever suddenly wanted to pick up a brand-new skill completely out of nowhere? For me recently, it’s learning a whole new language.
Up until now, I’ve been comfortable speaking Malay and English. I can understand a little bit of Mandarin, but if you ask me to actually speak it, my confidence completely vanishes. But out of nowhere right after watching Physical 100: Mexico on Netflix I suddenly fell in love with the Spanish language.
It was one of those random moments where I thought, "Okay, I really need to learn how to speak this." The appeal of the language just hit me out of the blue!
Duolingo, AI, and Keeping It Simple
What I really love about Spanish is that it actually feels pretty approachable to learn. The pronunciation is fairly straightforward, and the phonetic sounds aren't too far off from what I'm already used to.
So, I reinstalled Duolingo (which had been collecting digital dust on my phone for ages) and started my daily streak. I also paired it with some AI tools to practice basic sentence structures and conversational practice. You know what? In a surprisingly short amount of time, I’m actually able to have simple, basic conversations in Spanish now!
When you start seeing tangible progress going from knowing zero words to actually building sentences the feeling of satisfaction is so real.
The Ultimate Goal: Bad Bunny
To be completely honest, beyond wanting to pick up a productive skill, my ultimate goal isn't necessarily moving to Mexico anytime soon.
I just genuinely cannot wait for the day that I can listen to Bad Bunny and actually understand what he is singing about! For the longest time, whenever a Spanish track came on, I was just blindly vibing to the beat. Nodding my head along to the rhythm without having a single clue what the lyrics meant.
Imagine driving in your car, blasting a Bad Bunny track, and singing along while knowing every single line. That’s going to feel amazing.
A Perfect Escape from the Real World
On a deeper, more personal level, learning Spanish as a new hobby is exactly what I needed right now.
The world can be overwhelming, and keeping up with daily stress or constant bad news on social media takes a toll. Picking up a new language gives me a healthy outlet and serves as the perfect distraction. When your brain is actively engaged in figuring out grammar rules, memorizing new vocabulary, or practicing phrases like "hola", "gracias", or "buenos días", it automatically forces you to pause and step away from real-world anxieties.
I’m so glad I decided to start this journey. It’s a fun, rewarding way to spend my free time, and it gives me a little spark of progress to look forward to every day.
Have you picked up any fun new hobbies lately? Let me know!
