Watching Wicked: Part I on IMAX was an absolute treat. As someone unfamiliar with the Broadway version and not typically a fan of musicals, I went in with no expectations, and yet, the film managed to tick all the boxes for an enjoyable cinematic experience. It was fun, heartfelt, and visually stunning—I had a fantastic time.
A Breathtaking Land of Oz
One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its depiction of the Land of Oz. Having always been a fan of Oz's enchanting visuals, I was curious to see how director Jon M. Chu would bring this iconic world to life. His vision didn’t disappoint—the Land of Oz was breathtaking, and every scene was a visual spectacle.
Powerful Performances and Unforgettable Music
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande delivered phenomenal performances as Elphaba and Glinda. Their chemistry brought depth to their friendship, and their musical talents elevated the film's emotional impact. I got teary-eyed several times just listening to them sing, and their rendition of "Defying Gravity" left me with chills—it was that good.
A Villain We Love to Hate
Among the stellar supporting cast, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morible was a standout. I’ve never hated one of her characters before, but she truly embodied wickedness in this role. Her performance was so convincing it left me seething at her character—a testament to her brilliance as an actress.
A Story that Resonates
Although I’m not familiar with the original Broadway musical, the film’s storytelling felt solid and captivating. The decision to split the narrative into two parts worked wonderfully, allowing the characters and their journeys to develop fully. By the end of this installment, I found myself rooting for Elphaba and questioning the morality of the Ozians.
Relatable Themes of Misunderstanding
On a personal level, the story of Elphaba resonated deeply with me. Her struggle with being misunderstood and overlooked struck a chord. I could relate to how society often listens to and favors those who fit a certain mold, ignoring others who may have more substance. It’s a powerful message about perception and the value of individuality.
A Feel-Good Masterpiece
Whether you're a fan of the Broadway musical, a loyal Arianator, or someone simply looking for a feel-good movie to enjoy with your family, Wicked: Part I is an absolute must-watch. It’s easily the best musical movie of the year.
