Movie Review: Smile 2

The sequel to Smile (2022) had a lot to live up to, and Smile 2 definitely delivered. Directed by Parker Finn, this 2024 psychological supernatural horror takes everything that worked in the first film and dials it up a notch, especially in terms of gore and violence. If you’re a horror fan craving unsettling imagery and jump scares, this one will leave you squirming in your seat. But there’s more to it than just shock value.

Plot & Premise

The story centers around Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), a pop sensation on the verge of a world tour, who begins experiencing a series of terrifying and disturbing events. As her life spirals out of control, she is forced to confront her dark past. The premise isn’t entirely new for the genre, but it’s well-executed here, keeping the audience gripped as Skye’s unraveling life mirrors her internal torment.

Naomi Scott's Standout Performance

Scott’s portrayal of Skye is a highlight. She brings an emotional depth to the role that makes her descent into madness feel raw and authentic. You can really feel her vulnerability and strength fighting for control, which makes her journey all the more intense. The way Scott carries the film truly blew me away. It’s one of her best performances to date, and she definitely elevates the tension and horror surrounding her.

Cinematography & Score

What really sets Smile 2 apart is its stunning art direction. The cinematography is visually striking, blending surreal imagery with chaotic violence, creating a sense of dread that rivals some of horror’s greatest classics. The music score adds another layer to the atmosphere, complementing the visuals with eerie tones and unsettling melodies that stay with you long after the film ends. These elements combine to create a terrifyingly immersive experience.

The Horror Factor: More Gore, More Fear

If you thought the first movie had its fair share of disturbing moments, Smile 2 ramps it up with even more shocking visuals and psychological horror. There are several scenes that hit hard, catching you completely off guard. As a fan of horror, these disturbing visuals left a strong impression on me. The violence and scare factor have certainly improved, making it a more intense and graphic experience than its predecessor.

The Mysterious Entity

While the movie succeeds in delivering more scares and ramping up the tension, one area that left me wanting more is the entity itself. We get to see more of this malevolent force compared to the first movie, but its origin and purpose remain vague. This entity seems to prey on guilt and insecurity, but I’m still left questioning its backstory. Perhaps a Smile 3 could dive deeper into its origins and why it does what it does.

Underlying Themes: A Reflection on Mental Health

What makes the entity intriguing is how it can be seen as a metaphor for mental health struggles. It latches onto those burdened by guilt or insecurity, feeding on their negative emotions and consuming them from the inside. This portrayal of internal torment can hit close to home for many viewers, as it mirrors how real-life negativity can spiral out of control. In this way, Smile 2 isn’t just about supernatural terror, but also a reflection on how unaddressed mental struggles can wreak havoc on both the individual and those around them.

Final Thoughts

Smile 2 is a worthy sequel that lives up to its predecessor and offers more in terms of horror and gore. The combination of Naomi Scott’s stellar performance, striking visuals, and an unsettling score makes it a standout horror film for 2024. While the nature of the entity remains somewhat elusive, the film’s exploration of psychological horror and the darker aspects of human emotion adds layers to the scares. Horror fans, especially those who love a good mix of psychological and supernatural horror, will definitely want to check this one out.
